MAC Studio Fix Fluid Review and Swatches: A Tad Disappointing!

by Shivani on November 26, 2013

in MAC, Negative Reviews, Reviews

So, this is going to be another one of my negative MAC reviews. I love MAC but sometimes their products fail to impress. This is only my second negative MAC review though (the other one was on the MAC 190 Brush). Most of the time I am raving about their products because they’re just so darn awesome! We all know MAC is pricey and it sucks to buy a MAC product and later on regret it.

The MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation is one that’s been sitting in my drawer for the longest time. I got it about a year ago and well.. I absolutely hate it! Why did I buy it then? Well I was pretty much a makeup virgin back then. I had now idea how to do anything! I had heard rave review of MAC foundations and thought if I bought one it would change my life (lol!). Little did I know that MAC sells numerous foundations according to your skin type and needs. I did not need the full coverage studio fix fluid! My skin was and is pretty clear. It’s a concealer that I should have invested in back then.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid Review

So when I got this foundation I marched up to the sales assistant and straight away told him to give me the studio fix fluid. I read some reviews on it and all were positive so I’d thought I would go for it. Without any research or without even telling the S.A. what I want from a foundation and what my skin type is I bought it.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid Swatches in NC 42

The absolute worst part is that he gave me something like three shades darker! It’s an NC 42 and back then I had no idea how to match shades so like a dummy I bought it and was thrilled. Quite funny now that I think about it.

I am still unsure of what my shade in MAC foundations is (because I never bought one again). I believe i’m an NC 37 (heck maybe even NC 35). There’s a huge difference between NC 42 and 37!

MAC NC 42 studio fix fluid swatches

See how dark it is for me? (Oh and ignore the little bumps on my skin. I get these in the winters when i’m cold)

Why I dislike the MAC Studio Fix Fluid:

~ It smells HORRIBLE! Ugh! No kidding it smells really really bad. I can describe the smell as medicines and chemicals stuffed in a bottle. I asked a few of my friends as well and they confirmed that it smells disgusting.

~ It’s very unnatural looking. It’s medium Β to full coverage and gives my skin a fake plastic look. I’m all for the natural makeup look and prefer my bare minerals powder foundation for everyday use (or the laura mercier silk creme foundation for events).

~ It’s also really thick and hard to blend.

~ It doesn’t come with a pump! It’s just a glass bottle with a cap so you have to spill it out to use it.

Β Price: $27

Amount: 30 ml

How many times have I used it?: Once. After months of buying it I tried it and immediately washed it away. I kept it for so long because I wanted to do a blog post on it. Now that that’s done it will now be going back to MAC tomorrow.

Phew! I am not a fan of doing negative reviews but I want Glam Diaries to be a place where girls come for honest reviews.

After all the negativity let’s end on a positive note. Look at Mr. MAC snowman! Haha!

Ohhhh nooooooo… That’s a terrible shade for you! I will be honest, I HATE MAC’s foundation. I love most of the rest of their products but their foundation is just crap. It looks lovely on most but it’s just crap. that’s just me, though.

Never feel bad about a negative review, especially one that clearly states WHY you didn’t like it. It’s not like you wrote “this is teh crap! I hatez it! BURN IT!” or something. I find your negative review to be fair and balanced and HONEST with clear and concise points. It’s a good, negative review πŸ™‚

Haha you’re right. It was a ‘polite negative review’ lol. I dislike MAC foundations too. For me MAC is all about the lipsticks! LOOOVE MAC lipsticks. Thanks for reading! Do you write a blog? πŸ™‚

Absolutely! A polite negative is a good negative, imho πŸ™‚

I agree! Their lipsticks are amazing. Oh and their blush and eye shadows! LOL I went bonkers over the Marilyn Monroe line. Obsessed.

Yes! Haha They are so amazing! You need them. LOL. I also love TheBalm and Urban Decay, too. Beautiful pigments. I get a bit obsessive.

Thanks for coming by! And subscribing (I already follow you via Bloglovin, too!)!

In case you don’t see the replies- You have GOT to watch Firefly! Do you get access to Hulu in Canada? Also- Yes yes yes on Khaled Hosseini! He’s amazing. I need to read The Mountains Echoed. How do you like it so far?

Oh that brings back memories because the MNY liquid mousse was my second foundation (my first was a crappy body shop one. don’t know what I was thinking buying it!) and I was in LOVE with it!
Ya the MAC foundation looks cakey on the SAs too haha!

Fiona November 26, 2013 at 1:12 pm

MAC had few good foundations but somehow never impressed with the shades they suggest… As u said 2-3 shades darker… Damn! I had an nc 45 concealer which I wore may be 3-4 times.. Lovely review

LOL I remember my first MAC concealer- they gave me an NW 42!! Like really?! I’m not a makeup artist but even I know better! Haha.. these people. I think the SAs at sephora are a lot better- way more friendly and knowledgeable.

gah! i know… a few MAC SA’s are very polite & sweet but there are few rude ones! unhelpful… And yes Sephora they are pretty polite

I hear you Fiona. It’s a bit of a challenge to get the right shade for your skin. I find I have to buy one color up and down and mix it up to get the right color. Come summer or winter, I tend to match one shade or the other (depends on if I get or loose the tan)

fiona furtado December 12, 2013 at 2:26 pm

I swear! so freaking annoying right? had it been less pricey i would just be okay in discarding… anyways MAC concealer is of no use now:(

LOL I know! HAHA! I was not too knowledgeable at that time so went ahead and bought it. I think i’m an NC 37 too.

Shivani you saved me! I was going this weekend to buy this foundation and your review stopped me! Gosh that foundation looks so cakey! I’d rather get some other drug store brand.

That’s what I want to get out of this blog- to recommend amazing products and save girls from buying crap.

I don’t know if bare minerals is available in India but your skin is similar to mine so I would highly recommend that for you. It’s a foundation that comes in a powder form and gives amazing natural coverage and you have great skin and don’t need too much coverage. It’s my fave!

OMG how dare they gave you dark shade πŸ™ I appreciate your honest review, I hate the MUA in MAC stores always πŸ™

Reply

GlamDiaries November 27, 2013 at 4:15 am

At that time I didn’t know it was too dark for me πŸ™ I was new to makeup so didn’t know how to judge my colour. I really like the SAs at Sephora. They are ALWAYS nice. At MAC they are nice only around 50% of the times lol.

Glad i took 3-4 samples of this before investing into the bottle. Sad u gt the wrong shade πŸ™ What an utter waste! I think u might be NC 37 since NC35 is actually darker than 35. Just a heads up incase you might want to check it out again though i highly doubt it after the review :p

GlamDiaries November 27, 2013 at 4:41 am

NC 35 is darker than NC 37? No I won’t be going for a MAC foundation ever again lol! I don’t need that much coverage. I only wear foundation like 1-2 times a week. I like the bare minerals powder foundation the best! πŸ˜€ And the Laura Mercier Silk Creme foundation for events.

I hate mac foundations for thier oxidizing properties….ur snow man is cute…hehhee:)
Still cant understand, huv they can gv wrong shade….

Yaay FINALLY someone comments about the snowman LOL! I was wondering why no one thought it was cute haha!
Some MAC SAs are not too experienced and just randomly give you crap but it’s pretty rare.

Thats too bad that they gave you such a wrong foundation…Dont understand how they could have given you so many tones darker foundation πŸ™ I have this one & though I dont mind the coverage part, I have acne & pore..so this helps me concelas them..I do mind that it doesnt come with a pump. The texture is quite thick & is really difficult to remove from the bottle..I have heard good things of clinique foundations so I am gonna try that next…

Reply

GlamDiaries December 4, 2013 at 7:40 pm

I’v heard great things about clinique as well and a blogger named corallista always uses them so wanna try.
Besides the fact that they gave me the wrong colour the smell of this was what bothered me the most.

Sarah April 29, 2015 at 4:12 pm

Maybe if you had gone in and spoke to the SA about your skin type and the type of coverage you want, then you wouldn’t have had such a bad experience.
If you didn’t want high coverage, you could have gone for their Face & Body foundation which is a sheer foundation that just evens out your skin tone and doesn’t cake up. Perfect for every day wear. Almost like a water consistency.
MAC SFF is meant for medium to heavy coverage and definitely not meant for everyday use. Maybe next time you go into the store, actually sitting down with one of them and talking might make your experience better πŸ™‚

But yes, having said that – the fact that the SA gave you three shades darker was just stupid and their fault.

True..yeah. I usually spend a lot of time talking to MAC MUAs whenever I go but this was years ago when I was;t knowledgeable about makeup lol!

I’m obsessed with Urban Decay omg.. never seen more beautiful eyeshadows in my life. They are SO damn pigmented! πŸ˜€ I just got my first blush from The Balm (Cabana Boy).

We don’t get Hulu in Canada! πŸ™ I’ll try to search for it again. So far The mountains Echoed is okay. It’s a little boring compared to his other two books.

Reply

Jaime Huff December 2, 2013 at 2:30 am

Urban Decay is just stunning! The quality is amazing! Yay for your first blush from The Balm! Cabana Boy would look gorgeous on you! The Balm’s products are crazy pigmented, too. The only complaint I have is the fall out from the product BUT just tap your brushes really well and problem solved!

Oh booooo on Hulu! I remember a few years ago no access for Canada but wasn’t sure if it changed. What a bummer! If I find a website for you, I will let you know!

Well, crap on Mountains. I will still check it out. Hopefully it gets better!

Ya and I love how the balm products are eyeshadows and blushes- two in one! πŸ˜€ And they actually do work as eyeshadows because they’re nicely pigmented! πŸ™‚

Reply

Jaime Huff December 5, 2013 at 2:03 am

I agree! Their pigmentation is AMAZING!

Never tried clinique yet. Besides this MAC one I only really own two foundations. I’m not a foundation person and in all my YouTube videos come on camera without it. But it’s a good concealer that I really need. Right now I use the Nars creamy concealer and it’s my fave so far but not ‘perfect’.
